Sunshine, magnificent natural circumstances and amazing leisure is a simple recipe for an interesting time. Such was also certainly the past vacation 2021. Most of our compatriots spent it in our country, as clearly indicated by the tourist trends we learned and the choice of places where we rested. How did this year’s vacation look like? Where were we most likely to rest? Here is our summary of 2021.
The current holiday period was a way to return to normalcy in a way, after the events we know from the coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions in force. Hence, by far the greater number of Poles decided to go on a well-deserved vacation. We eagerly chose vacations at the Polish seaside, in the mountains and at climatic lakes surrounded by beautiful nature. Accommodation facilities, which were particularly besieged this year, boasted considerable interest from tourists. However, the increase was also due to the opportunity to take advantage of the tourist voucher, which is now only valid until March 2022.
It is a real pleasure to gather here the most relevant information on the travel destinations of our compatriots. As the statistics show, more than 34% of those surveyed decided to spend their vacations in the country, while a sizable portion – 38% – continued to stay at home. Women and people under the age of 49 were the most likely to travel, with a particular focus on families with children. Residents of small, medium and larger cities decided to take a vacation in their home towns, and were most likely to be college-educated (50%). The constantly uncertain situation outside our country’s borders made us most likely to choose accommodations within our country that have adequate security measures in place.

We asked 4horec Expert Mr. Lech Ostrowski, who said: “The 2021 holiday season was extremely busy, despite the previous slowdown, and all indications are that these trends will definitely increase next year.”
This year, the most popular regions in the country were Pomerania and Western Pomerania, which, as in the previous year, accounted for more than half of all inquiries. This was followed by Malopolska and Lower Silesia. The least visited areas were Lodz, Opole and Lubuskie provinces. According to our data, in Pomerania and Western Pomerania, the most popular destinations were cities such as Leba, Wladyslawowo, Krynica Morska, Mielno, Pobierowo and Kolobrzeg. As you can see, our compatriots are most likely to relax just by the sea. However, this is not the only direction of holiday trips.
Mountainous regions and, in particular, the Tatra Mountains, Zakopane, Karpacz and the Bieszczady were also very popular. Contrary to appearances, Polish tourists appreciate mountains not only in the most popular locations. So they willingly decided to visit places such as Krynica-Zdrój and Białka Tatrzańska. There is nothing surprising about this, as it is a suitable option for all who appreciate peace, quiet and beautiful Polish nature.
Our domestic tourism is constantly growing, and most of our picturesque regions can boast a developed accommodation base. The largest number of tourists, as in previous years, rested in lodgings and rooms, a much smaller part in cottages and apartments. What’s more interesting, guesthouses and villas were also of appropriate interest.
As can be seen this year, the 2021 holiday season was extremely successful. The accumulated data clearly indicate how popular among tourists were vacations in our native areas. This is a clear signal of a kind of stabilization of the tourism market, which, despite the previous turbulence, has a chance to build a strong and established position. Poles are more and more willing to decide to go to the sea or to the mountains, as is clear from surveys conducted this year. We can only rejoice at the upward trend this year and hope for an increase in the next season.
